International Development Scholarship in association with International Students House


Introduction

The International Development Scholarship in association with International Students House (ISH) is a combined tuition fee, residential and maintenance scholarship offered to an international student from a developing country, who intends to make a positive contribution to the development of their home country as result of completing the MSc NGO and Development Management Programme, who would otherwise be unable to pursue the Programme for financial reasons.
The Scholarship will be offered annually and is the product of a partnership between International Students House, one of London's largest residences for International Students, and the University of East London, a global learning community with over 28,000 students from over 120 countries world-wide.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the International Development Scholarship, applicants must:
  • First apply online for the MSc NGO and Development programme. The application will be assessed and if you are successful, the International admissions office will send you an International offer letter at UEL
  • Be from a developing or emerging country. Please click here for a list of developing or emerging countries. If you are from a country that is not on this list but you believe it should be, please email scholarships@uel.ac.uk for clarification
  • Intend to return to your home country on completion of the course in order to put your studies into practice
  • Be able to demonstrate that you would otherwise be unable to pursue the course for financial reasons

Value of Scholarship

The Scholarship will include the following:
  • Return flights (Booked by UEL)
  • Tuition Fees
  • Accommodation*: Single room accommodation at ISH
  • Food*: 2 or 3 meals a day at ISH, the remaining meals covered by subsistence
  • Subsistence(including travel)*: £450 per month
*For up to 12 months

Conditions of Scholarship

The University at its sole discretion reserves the right to allocate and administer the scholarship award as appropriate and conditions may be subject to change.
  • The scholar must enrol on the MSc NGO and Development Management Programme for the intake stated on their Scholarship Offer Letter. The Scholarship cannot be deferred.
  • The scholar must comply with the terms and conditions of admittance and the University's Regulations, including our Attendance Policy. Where there is a failure to comply then the scholarship award may be withdrawn in whole or part.
  • The scholar will be expected to complete their programme of study successfully within the time frame outlined on their Scholarship Offer Letter. The scholarship award does not cover additional costs for any re-takes of module/s.
  • The scholar will be expected to participate in current and future promotional activities and as such will be interviewed and photographed by the UEL marketing department. The scholar will also contribute from time to time to the promotion of UEL by supporting events organised for scholars and events organised by the International Office. The scholar agrees no payment will be made by the University to the scholar for their participation in promotional activities.
  • The scholar assigns to the University any intellectual property or other rights which are created as part of the promotional material.
  • Scholars will be expected to donate up to 10 hours per month of service to ISH or UEL International in some way, such as representing ISH at events.
  • Accommodation is a single occupancy room in ISH halls of residence. It will be the scholar's responsibility to accept the room offer within the specified time frame. The award will not cover any alternative accommodation and no payment in lieu will be made where the ISH single occupancy room is not occupied. Scholars are not expected to bring family members to the UK, by nature of the eligibility criteria with regards to financial hardship.
  • Food will be provided for up to 12 months. The scholar will be provided with a ‘top up card’ for meals at ISH. All additional meals are to be paid for using the monthly subsistence allowance. No payment will be made in lieu of food vouchers that are not used.
  • The scholar will be provided with £450 per month for subsistence, for up to 12 months, to cover travel, meals at UEL and other living expenses.
  • Return flights to the UK from the scholar’s country of residence will be booked by UEL. Flights for the return journey will be booked for within a month of the programme end date.

Tier 4 (General) Student Visa

Where necessary under UK Border Agency (UKBA) regulations, scholars will be required to apply for prior entry clearance (Tier 4 General Student). Student immigration requirements for entry into the UK are operated on a points based system. Scholars must ensure that they meet all the requirements for entry within their application, in line with the UKBA’s Tier 4 Policy Guidance. Scholars should only proceed with their acceptance of the award if they are confident that they meet these requirements. A letter will be provided to the scholar by UEL for use in the Tier 4 application process, as evidence of maintenance. The scholarship award will not be made, or if made will be withdrawn where a Tier 4 student visa is not granted, or is subsequently withdrawn.

The University reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship award if the conditions outlined above are not met.

How and when to apply

Applicants must have obtained an offer for the MSc NGO and Development Management Programme before applying for this scholarship. To apply for the Programme please click here. Applicants must have applied to the Programme by 5pm (UK time) on Wednesday 20th June 2012.
Any applications for Programme received after 20th June 2012 will not be considered for the scholarship.

Apply for scholarship

In addition to submitting an online application, you are required to email a supporting testimonial/ reference from a previous employer or academic tutor demonstrating that you meet the criteria, including financial status. This should be submitted by email to scholarships@uel.ac.uk after you have submitted the online application.
The deadline to submit your scholarship application and testimonial is Friday 13th July 2012. Applications will not be accepted after this date.

Assessment Procedure

Applications will be assessed according to merit and financial need by a selected panel at the University of East London and International Students House. The panel may request to interview applicants over the telephone. Candidates who are selected for interview will be notified of this by telephone and email.
The panel will make their final selections by marking the quality of the application and interview (where applicable), the preparedness for the high quality study in the discipline area, the articulation of how the Scholarship will contribute to the applicant’s study goals, personal development and long term career gains in making a positive contribution to the development of their home country.

Notification of Scholarship Outcome

The successful applicant will be notified by telephone and email by 30th July 2012. They will then be sent an award letter which may be required for visa purposes. The award letter will be posted to the correspondence address on your application form. You must inform us (by emailing admissions.international@uel.ac.uk) if your contact details change so that we can contact you at the correct address.
The scholar will receive an acceptance form with their award letter and this must be returned by email. If you do not consent to the terms and conditions of the scholarship, it will have to be withdrawn.
Unsuccessful applicants will be informed of the final decision by email.

1. How can I get an offer letter?
Before applying for this scholarship you will need to have made a successful application to the MSc NGO and Development Management programme online here: http://www.uel.ac.uk/programmes/lss/postgraduate/apply/ngo.htm, or by downloading the application form here: www.uel.ac.uk/international/application/index.htm . If your application is successful you will be emailed an offer letter from our International Admissions office.
2. What is the UEL ID number?
Before you can apply for a scholarship you first need to have an offer of a place on our MSc NGO and Development Management programme. If your programme application is successful you will be emailed an offer letter containing your 7-digit UEL ID number. You will then be able to apply for a scholarship using the online form here.
3. Is my country eligible for this scholarship?
Please check the list of countries here.
If your country is not on this list but you feel it should be, please email scholarships@uel.ac.uk. Please note this list is published by International Students House.
4. Do I need to submit my IELTS/TOEFL scores?
All applicants are required to provide evidence of English language level. We recognise many English language qualifications including IELTS, TOEFL, Pearson’s Test of English and some country specific examinations. If your application to the Programme is successful you will receive an offer letter from the International Admissions team, stating the evidence you are required to provide if required. 5. My IELTS/TOEFL scores will be declared after July 13, can I still apply for the scholarship?
For the International Development Scholarship you must have an unconditional offer (with no academic conditions) to be considered. Evidence of English language is a requirement of admission to the MSc NGO and Development Management Programme. As the Scholarship is for entry in September 2012, the scholarship applications will need to be assessed immediately after the deadline on 13 July 2012. You therefore must ensure that all academic conditions have been met by 13th July 2012.
6. Is the Scholarship for any other programme?
No. The International Development Scholarship is open to applicants with an offer for our MSc NGO and Development Management Programme only. However, applicants with an offer for another Master’s programme may be eligible for one of our other international scholarships. Please note, however, that these are only partial scholarships.
7. What documents do I need to upload?
When you have a successful offer for the MSc NGO and Development Management Programme , you can apply for the scholarship using the online form here. When you have submitted your scholarship application, you are required to email a supporting testimonial/ reference from a previous employer or academic tutor demonstrating that you meet the criteria, including financial status. London Met Postgraduate Scholarship


Background:
  • Students who hold an unconditional offer for one of our postgraduate degree programmes and who pay international tuition fees may apply for a scholarship.
  • You can't apply for a scholarship unless you have applied for a course and been given an unconditional offer to study at London Met
    (current continuing students are the only exception to this rule).
  • The scholarship programme provides full and partial tuition fee financial support  for students on taught Masters degree programmes.
  • Applicants are judged on academic merit and on the likely economic/social benefit to their home country of them doing a Masters degree in the UK.
    (This must be clearly demonstrated in the personal statement that the above criteria are met).
Evidence of paid and/or voluntary work done should also be included in the scholarship application, where applicable. 
·         Applications for London Met scholarships are reviewed twice yearly (in June and November) by a panel of academic staff at the University.

Backgrounds: This scholarship scheme is run jointly by International Students House (ISH) and London Metropolitan University. International Students House provides accommodation and a varied, multicultural social programme for full-time international students in the centre of London.

  • Students applying for the ISH/London Met scholarship must hold an unconditional offer on one of our undergraduate or postgraduate degree courses.
  • Please note that Short Courses, English Language Courses, Foundation Programmes, HND's and Pre-Masters are not covered.
  • The deadlines are 31st May for courses starting in September and 31st October for courses starting in February.

Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Scholarships (OCISS)


Background: These scholarships have been established by the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies to allow graduates to pursue study of benefit to the Muslim world. The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies is a Recognized Independent Centre of the University of Oxford. It was established in 1985 to encourage the scholarly study of Islam and the Islamic world. The Centre provides a meeting point for the Western and Islamic worlds of learning. At Oxford it contributes to the multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary study of the Islamic world. Beyond Oxford, its role is strengthened by an international network of academic contacts.

Candidates should apply by Application Deadline 2. In order to be considered for this scholarship, you must submit your application for graduate study by the January deadline and you must have secured a place on your chosen program of study by the expected final decision date. Applications with an outstanding admissions decision after this date, or applications which are re-evaluated against the later March deadline field are not eligible for scholarship consideration. You must also complete a Scholarship Supporting Statement and upload it together with your Graduate Application Form by the application deadline in order for your application to be complete.

IDB-Oxford Clarendon Scholarships at University of Oxford


Background: The Islamic Development Bank was established in 1973, and aims to foster the economic growth and social progress of its member countries. These Scholarships enable academically outstanding students to study at Oxford and contribute to the improvement of socio-economic conditions in their country. The Scholarships are supported jointly by the Islamic Development Bank and the University of Oxford.

  • Subject: All subjects in MPLS, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences Divisions
  • Duration: Period of fee liability
  • Number of awards: Up to 5

Eligibility

Candidates should be applying to start any new full-time graduate course in the MPLS, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences divisions, with the exception of PGCert and PGDip courses. Candidates should also be from one of the IDB member countries and be nominated by the IDB for the scholarship, having submitted successful applications to the relevant office of the IDB Governor, through their nominating institution.

Benefit:

The combined IDB-Oxford Clarendon Scholarship will cover tuition fees and college fees in full as well as providing a grant for living expenses. Awards are made for the full duration of a student's fee liability for the agreed course. The continuation of your scholarship each year is subject to an annual renewal process based on satisfactory academic progress.

How to apply

Eligible candidates will be painstaking automatically by the University, provided that you submit your application for graduate study by the January deadline .You must have tenable a place on your chosen program of study by the predictable final decision date. Applications with an outstanding admissions decision after this date, or applications which are re-evaluated against the later March deadline field are not eligible for scholarship consideration.
